The VP Agency Nurse will work within a team, have clinical responsibility for a group of patients and supervise the work of junior staff. In doing so the VP Nurse will

• Uphold the interests of patients and service users at all times
• Keep knowledge, skills and competences up to date
• Recognize limits to their own knowledge and skill and take appropriate action to address any deficiencies
• Ensure that existing standards of care are not compromised by new developments and responsibilities
• Acknowledge their own professional accountability for all actions and omissions
• Avoid inappropriate delegation

DUTIES

Clinical

• Carry out nursing procedures and techniques in accordance with agreed policies and guidelines

• Be responsible for the assessment of patient care needs, the development of programmes of care, their implementation and evaluation

• Recognise, act upon appropriately and report changes in the clinical condition of patients

• Organise, manage and prioritise patient care within your team

• Ensure that the rights, dignity and confidentiality of the patient are protected at all times

Communication

• Maintain effective channels of communication with patients and their cares/families

• Liaise effectively within the multidisciplinary team, and with other agencies involved in patient care

• Actively participate in multidisciplinary team walk rounds, case conferences and consultant ward rounds

• Facilitate communication within your nursing team

• Feedback relevant information to the appropriate staff

• Maintain high standards written communication in nursing records according to Nursing Midwifery Council guidelines and Directorate policy

• Maintain confidentiality of both the written and spoken word as directed in the Nursing Midwifery councils code of professional conduct

Health and Safety

• Report all accidents and untoward incidents according to hospital policy and procedures

• Be alert to potential environmental hazards and act accordingly to safeguard self and others

• Be fully conversant with, adhere to and enforce all Health and Safety policies

Education

• Fulfill VP’s annual mandatory training requirements (fire awareness, moving and handling, etc.)

• Demonstrate a desire to continue your education by indentifying personal objectives and training needs

• Formulate an action plan to achieve desired outcomes of identified needs in conjunction with senior staff

• Actively participate in formal and informal teaching programmes of colleagues, patients and carers

• Act as a resource for junior staff if appropriate

• Keep abreast of research and developments in the care of mentally ill people in order to be able to carry out your duties competently and efficiently

• Feedback information gained from courses, study days and link nurse meetings

Professional Conduct

• Conduct yourself in a calm professional manner at all times

• Maintain a smart, neat appearance at all times

• Remain friendly and approachable to all teams members

• Be reliable, punctual and flexible

• Work within the guidelines laid down by the Nursing Midwifery Council and their code of professional conduct and ensure that your registration with the Nursing Midwifery Council is maintained.

• When required, work wherever necessary, within the directorate or service users alternative requirements

Management

• In the absence of more senior staff and on night duty you will be required to take charge of the ward, co-coordinating ward activities and dealing with problems that arise during that period of time

• Work within a team and support your senior staff nurse

• Assist with the induction of new starters where relevant

• Assist senior staff in developing ward policies and in the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of all policies and procedures

• Assist the ward managers to implement and manage change within the clinical area

• Generate and share ideas for developments within the clinical area where relevant

• Participate in the audit of nurse practice in the clinical environment where appropriate
